A Profile Is Worth a Thousand Dates

Setup a profile that people want to read.

Setting up your profile is the most important step in developing a positive online dating experience. Doing it wrong can lead to lonely nights and cold showers. It's generally the first thing people see about you besides your picture. While a good profile picture can get somebody to click on your profile, it's your words that seal the deal. Put a little thought into your profile using these guidelines and you'll get more dates and have more success.

There are several different ways to craft your dating profile. You can be serious and state exactly what you want, a no nonsense approach, be humorous, write like your the life of the party. Any of those options are great ways to define yourself, just make sure of one thing: You actually are what you write.

If you try to act like you are a "life of the party" kind of person but are actually an engineer working for IBM and a good date to you is a quiet dinner at a small restaurant your date is going to be sorely disappointed. It's not that the $100.00 you drop on dinner isn't a nice gesture and the food may be great. Heck you may even be a really great person, but it's not what the other was expecting. Don't write your profile to try to attract every possible being of the opposite sex, write it to attract the kind of person you want to date. It will keep both of you from wasting each others time.

Here is an example:
  • Straight Laced: I like to eat at fine Italian restaurants, maybe with a little violin music, and then catch a movie afterwards. If you're up to it we can stop by the coffee shop and talk over a fine espresso.
  • Sports Nut: Hey let's go catch a game together. I'm up for any type of sporting event and would love to see a game with you. We can go to the sports bar afterwards, get a beer, pizza, or maybe some wings.
  • Life of the Party: My ideal night is at the club. I'm an accomplished dancer and just can't wait to get on the dance floor and move my feet. I'll dance to just about anything, rock, r&b, and even a little country line dancing.

Now do you think the Life of the Party would enjoy a night with Straight Laced? Probably not. Each one of them might like to try the other types of things, but they aren't going to be interested in them for the long term. It's best to write your profile with this in mind. Don't try to be everything to everybody, just be yourself and let your true personality shine through. Everybody will be better for it.
